The charity which sends teams of medical specialists to perform lifesaving heart surgery for underprivileged families, has reached global status.

Founded in 2007 by children’s Consultant Intensivist at Leicester’s Hospitals, Dr Sanjiv Nichani, Healing Little Hearts treats the poorest of children across countries such as India, Africa, Mauritius and Malaysia, who do not have the resources to pay for healthcare.

The charity first started treating patients in Mumbai who needed life-saving heart operations, but since then the charity has moved at speed by treating 281 patients last year alone, in four different countries.

The list of countries where children have benefitted from the expert volunteers including surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists and specialised children’s nurses include, India, Tanzania, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius and now Romania.

Each team of specialist medics stay for one week and operate on between 10-12 children per trip. The charity also train junior doctors and nurses in children’s heart care with the eventual aim of helping the centres to become more self-sustaining.

The team recently returned from their first trip to Romania in June, and successfully treated 12 children at the Polisano Hospital in Sibiu. Although Romania has been in the EU for over a decade, less than half of children are born with congenital heart disease, which equates to around 1,000 children every year who do not get the life-saving surgery that they require to be able to lead normal lives.

Since the beginning, Healing Little Hearts has successfully treated a total of 1,112 babies, children and young people, giving them a completely new life which would not have happened due to the severe shortage of specialists and hospitals able to treat children born with heart defects.

Consultant Intensivist, Dr Sanjiv Nichani said: “We are very grateful to the extremely generous British public who have supported us over these last ten years, and through their generosity have given over a 1,000 children a new lease of life. However hundreds of thousands of children are still waiting for their life changing heart surgery, so please continue to support us.”
